“Albinos are set to Enjoy Extra Time in UTME – JAMB (Nigeria)”
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said albinos would begin to enjoy additional time of two hours in its future examinations.
JAMB Registrar Prof. 'Dibu Ojerinde said this while briefing officials for the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and a visit by representatives of the Albino foundation in Abuja.
He said the decision was taken due to the peculiar sight problem associated with albinism; hence the need for all examination bodies to do whatever they can to help them.
"For us in JAMB, we are trailing the blaze by incorporating the eye problem of the group into our examination planning," he said, adding that the Board was determined to provide them with magnifying lenses to help them bolden the type faces of words for examinations.
He called on other examination bodies in Nigeria and the continent to do same.
On his part, the Albino Foundation helmsman, Jake Epelle, said the visit of the foundation would surely translate to seeing more albinos registering and passing future UTME.
He commended JAMB for the innovations it took especially its decision to officially categorize and treat Albinos as visually impaired persons.
