Earth Hour: Light shut down around the world

Light for go out for 60 minutes around the globe

ON MARCH 31, at 8.30pm local time, lights around the world will be switched off for 60 minutes in support of International Earth Hour, which is an annual international event organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise awareness on climate change.
In honour of Earth Hour, businesses, individuals and governments will switch off their lights, including those on some of the world’s most famous monuments, for 60 minutes.
Numerous public events will be held to mark Earth Hour among the 135 countries taking part in the event. For more, go to www.earthhour.org /Facebook/ Twitter /YouTube.
Earth Hour is preceded by World Water Day (March 22) and followed by International Earth Day (April 22). The latter is aimed at promoting awareness on our environment and climate change.

Earth Day was first observed in 1970 in San Francisco and has since become an annual affair, growing into an international event with over 175 countries now taking part. The event encourages people to commit to ‘an act of green’ as part of its Billion Acts of Green Campaign.
Earth Hour 2012
The challenge of Earth Hour 2012 is to create awareness among the public to dare the world to save the planet – after all, we only have one planet and all of us can help protect it.
For a start, do your small part by switching off all non-essential lights for an hour from 8.30pm on March 31 in a collective display of commitment to a better future for the planet.
Think what can be achieved when we all come together for a common cause.
Let this Earth Hour prompt us all to do more than just switch off the lights. We should all try to also dare the world to save the planet.
“I Will If You Will” is a simple promise and a challenge. Dare anyone (your Facebook friends, co-workers, etc) to accept your challenge and help protect our Earth, or accept the challenge of someone else.
The Earth Hour City Challenge also encourages city folks to prepare for the costly impact climate-related extreme weather patterns will have on them and to reduce their carbon footprint.
You can be an integral part of this challenge. Send a letter to your mayor, urging him to prepare for climate change. Find out how your city is at risk from extreme weather changes.
Why is your participation important? Because our future depends on it.
Across the world, biodiversity is being affected and natural habitats are disappearing faster than ever before. We are depleting the Earth of certain species of wild animals, water, wood and other natural resources faster than they can be replenished. We are polluting the environment and changing the entire planet’s climate.
Things will only worsen if we continue in the same direction. Already, some of us in some parts of the globe are feeling the wrath of nature in the form of typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes, big floods, etc.
We must make a conscious effort to raise awareness on sustainability issues. But there is more to it than just switching off lights for an hour once a year.
Earth Hour is about giving people a voice and working together to create a better future for our planet
